For me, mountain biking through Hlane from camp to a watering hole 17km was the best way to get a taste of the wildlife we’d see on the game drives and hikes to come. I was in the second group to go, 8 of us and a guide, during our second day in Swaziland. We […]
Day 1 – Horse Riding On arrival at Mlilwane game reserve we were greeted by dozens of zebra and impala on the short drive to the reception. We discovered that our lunch was a wonderful selection of toasties with chips from the restaurant At 1pm we were greeted by our guide and taken to the […]
Sleeping under the stars is incredible. Today we went on an overnight trail where we camped under the stars at Sundwini, which is a rustic campsite about 12km from Hlane. We were supposed to be sleeping in what I can only describe as a portable bed, with pillow, mattress and a thick duvet. After the […]
Just a quick note because everyone was very excited to see the elephants appear from nowhere at the waterhole at Hlane Royal Game Reserve. Sitting by the waterhole watching the amazing elephants drinking and playing in the water, next to some rhinos. How wonderful, I couldn’t imagine being anywhere better than this right now From […]
The snakes were scary. My favorite out of the three was the boa constrictor, which we were allowed to hold around our neck ( might have accidentally hit it in the face). We also saw tarantula, slow worm ( SA equivalent), a puff adder and a cobra of some sort. Here is the run through […]
I never realised how amazing elephants are until today when we had the privilege of meeting Rambo, Rachel and Jabulani. The guide told us about the three of them and their lives and then allowed us to touch and feed them as well as allowing us to take lots of pictures. It was a great […]
Here at Umkhumbi Lodge you are likely to see Bella wandering around the rooms munching away at the grass. Bella is our hand-reared Impala. Bella cannot have been more than a couple of weeks old when she was brought to us. Unfortunately Bella’s mother was attacked by a predator and young Bella was found nearby […]
After weeks of waiting and digging the hole… …and waiting for the pool to arrive. It came and a week later the pool man came and we were all taunted by the invitingly blue water glinting in the sunshine. But why wait till summer?!
We were recently in the Times following a lovely weekend with Shelley and friends. See what she had to say below!
An amazing selection of birds here at the moment! From Long crested eagles to Pink throated twinspots including our resident Purple-Crested Turaco sparkling in the winter sun. We even had our regular guest Mr Goshawk, although we’re not 100% certain which type he is. Any suggestions welcome!
