Yesterday we took a drive into Mkhuze game reserve to show the volunteers a new park. Mkhuze is part of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park, and is about 45 minutes’ drive from Umkhumbi Lodge. We entered through Ophansi gate on the eastern side, and headed down to Nsumo pan where there are great views of the Mkhuze River floodplain and there is plenty of birdlife and wildlife to be seen.
Our wildlife sightings on this safari included hippos, crocodiles, impalas, nyalas, zebra, giraffe, baboons, slender mongoose, leopard tortoise and terrapins.
Bird watching in Mkhuze is generally excellent, and today was no exception. Notable species spotted included Pink-throated Twinspots, Lesser Jacana, Pelicans, Black-winged Stilts and African Spoonbill, through we saw many more.
At Khumasinga hide the impala rams were rutting, a giraffe covered in oxpeckers came for a drink and we enjoyed some photography of the little things. Below is a photo of the Common Waxbill at the waterhole.
