More than just a bed for the night, Umkhumbi Lodge is the best place to stay if you want to get the most out of your time in Hluhluwe. This is a family-friendly bush lodge run by Anton and Emma Roberts in the game-rich Hluhluwe-Imfolozi area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
Umkhumbi is the Zulu name for the red duiker, a shy small red antelope regularly seen picking its way across the forest floor.
WILDLIFE AND BIRDING
Umkhumbi Lodge is part of KULENI GAME PARK, a small private game reserve near Hluhluwe. Wildlife on-site include zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, suni, impala, warthogs, duikers, vervet monkeys, banded mongoose, bushbabies and even occasionally leopards are spotted too on the walking trails. It is popular for its stunning birdlife where there are sightings of Pink-throated Twinspots, Narina Trogon, Eastern Nicator and many more.
The area is rich in wildlife, with nearby Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park for Big 5 safaris as well as the rich, varied ecosystems of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
ROOMS AND SURROUNDINGS
Umkhumbi lodge has been sensitively built into pristine African sandforest, carefully preserving this fragile ecology. Our focus is on conservation through education and environmental awareness, delighting guests with all aspects of the African bush, big and small, and providing the service and experiences that have visitors returning as friends.
We have 9 guest rooms. All of our accommodation is extremely comfortable and spacious, with air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. Some rooms are self catering with a kitchen, others are non-self catering. A central open-fronted ‘lapa’ houses the dining room and treetop bar and lounge from where you can enjoy spectacular sunsets from the wooden deck. After the sun goes down, guests and guides gather around the fire to swap stories about the day’s exciting adventures.
TRAVELLING IN KZN
This is a great base for seeing the best of the area. Choose from a wide range of adventure activities, explore the rich Zulu culture, visit the historic battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift or relax on the Indian Ocean’s endless sandy beaches. Umkhumbi is roughly half way between Durban and Maputo since the tar road and bridge has been built in Mozambique between Farazela and Maputo harbour; a great place to break the journey.
