Much more than just a bed for the night, Umkhumbi Lodge is the best place to stay in Hluhluwe if you want to get the most out of your holiday. With great rooms and a network of walking and cycling trails, this is a great base from which to explore the surrounding game reserves. Head up the northcoast from Durban into Zululand and you reach the game-rich Hluhluwe-Imfolozi area of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. There are many protected areas including iSimangaliso, Mkhuze as well as Hluhluwe. Umkhumbi is a family-friendly bush lodge run by Anton and Emma Roberts situated inside Kuleni Game Park, which is a small private nature reserve full of wild animals and an amazing variety of birds.
WILDLIFE AND BIRDING
Umkhumbi Lodge is part of KULENI GAME PARK, a small private game reserve near Hluhluwe. (Umkhumbi is the Zulu name for the red duiker, a shy small red antelope regularly seen picking its way across the forest floor.) Wildlife on-site include zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, kudu, nyala, suni, impala, warthogs, duikers, vervet monkeys, banded mongoose, squirrels, bushbabies and even occasionally leopards are spotted too on the walking trails. It is popular for its stunning birdlife where there are sightings of Pink-throated Twinspots, Narina Trogon, Eastern Nicator and many more.
The area is rich in wildlife, with nearby Hluhluwe Imfolozi Park for Big 5 safaris as well as the rich, varied ecosystems of the iSimangaliso Wetland Park.
ROOMS AND SURROUNDINGS
Umkhumbi lodge has been sensitively built into pristine African sandforest, carefully preserving this fragile ecology. Our focus is on conservation through education and environmental awareness, delighting guests with all aspects of the African bush, big and small, and providing the service and experiences that have visitors returning as friends.
We have 6 guest chalets. All of our accommodation is extremely comfortable and spacious, with air-conditioning and en-suite facilities. Some rooms are self catering with a kitchen, others are non-self catering.
Guests can enjoy the bar/lounge area which looks out over the reserve and the distant hills. We have a pool table and a selection of games and puzzles for the children to enjoy while you relax and watch the sunset! We have a swimming pool and a kids play area. Children also love to play with Shadow and Copper, our two friendly resident dogs, who will greet you with an enthusiastic wag of the tail.
Please note that we do not have bar or restaurant facilities at present (September/October 2020).
PEACE AND QUIET
We are in a nature reserve. This is not the place you are looking for if you want to have a big noisy party. Our terms and conditions prohibit littering, firearms and fireworks, excessive alcohol consumption, loud music, no pets allowed etc. Please respect our natural environment.
TRAVELLING IN KZN
This is a great base for seeing the best of the area. Choose from a wide range of adventure activities, explore the rich Zulu culture, visit the historic battlefields of Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift or relax on the Indian Ocean’s endless sandy beaches. Umkhumbi is roughly half way between Durban and Maputo since the tar road and bridge has been built in Mozambique between Farazela and Maputo harbour; a great place to break the journey. We can help you with your route planning. Read more here.
